Submarine Watercolor

Hello Crafters!

It's Kelly here and I'm sharing a fun watercolor background card today.

I really wanted to try a watercolor technique I saw Jennifer Rzasa do. Basically you paint on your background and then laydown a stencil on top of it to let it dry. I really love the way it turned out.

I started by painting clean water in a loose square onto watercolor paper. I started dropping in color at the bottom right using Salty Ocean Distress Ink. Moving at a diagonal I added in Peacock Feathers and finally Cracked Pistachio. I laid a grid stencil down on top of the background and used a large acrylic block to weigh it down. I let it dry completely. When you pull the stencil off you have a subtle impression. It looks super cool!

I stamped the submarine on top of the background and then stamped it a second time on some regular white cardstock. I colored it with copics and fussy cut it out. I added it on top of the stamped one with foam tape.

The sentiment is from the same set. I added a few bubbles just for fun. A few iridescent sequins finished it off.

When creating your background make sure you don't have too much water before you place your stencil. A large area of water causing warping and then your stencil can't press directly against the paper. Definitely use something to weigh it down.

We love to see your projects! Don't forget to link them up in the sidebar!

  2. Great technique idea, Kelly. The colors are fabulous. Appreciate the tips as well. Knowing me, I'd use too much water at first. :)
